âNice, that was perfect. No complaints this time, yeah?â
âGrrr... Rematch! One more game, come on!â
âFine, guess I have to...â
âGah! Youâve gotta be kidding me. That was just a fluke!â I exclaimed.
âA winâs a win, even if it was only a fluke. Sucks to suck, you sore loser!â Miori jeered.
âYouâve lost every other game. Whyâre you bragging about one win...?â
I bought water from the vending machine and gulped it down. âPhew! I feel alive again,â I said. I was absolutely bushed and couldnât move another muscle.
We were only supposed to play one first-to-three game, but Miori kept whining when she lost... Iâm beat. What time is it? I checked my phone; it was already 10 p.m., way too late. If I took the train now, itâd be past eleven by the time I got home.
For the record, Mei was exhausted and had gone home a long time ago. Heâd waited for us at first, but our games had gone on endlessly, and he had become tired of watching. I feel bad for neglecting him.
I carried the drinks Iâd bought from the vending machine back to where Miori was. Sheâd thrown herself down on the grass in the park. Sure, weâre the only ones out here this late at night, but what the heck are you doing?
âYouâre going to get your uniform dirty,â I said.
âToo late for that. Itâs Friday, anyway. I just need to wash it this weekend,â she said.
âI brought some drinks.â
âWhatâd you buy?â
âStrawberry orange juice. Itâs your favorite, right?â
âIâd like to say, âNice job,â but I just want to drink water right now.â
âI knew youâd say that, so I also got water.â
âHuh, dang, nice job! Youâve really grown up.â Miori sat up, and I handed her a bottle.
âI drank some of it already, though,â I added.
âPfft! Hey! Y-You...â It looked like some water had gone down the wrong pipe, because she coughed violently.
âYouâre not one to care about that stuff, anyway.â I laughed at the dumb look on her face and sat down beside her.
âThat was back when we were kids. Itâs different now! Um... There are gender differences and whatever, got it?â Her tone was hesitant as she spoke, and her face was red.
Not a sight I see often. But I guess sheâs got a point. Things truly arenât the same as they used to be. Me, Miori, the people around usâeverything is different now.
I gazed up at the cloudless night sky. The stars scattered up there were beautiful. âHey, do you remember the first time we met?â Even now, that was the only moment I could recall clearly.
âWas it something special? I donât really remember,â she replied.
âNothing special to you.â
To Miori, that was probably just one minor scene in her typical day-to-day life. But for me, it was a precious memory.
âHey, whatcha doing? Come play with us!â
It had happened in the spring of our first year of elementary school. When I hadnât fit into any friend groups, Miori had taken my hand. And through her, Iâd made good friends.
